Located in the heart of Tokyo, the Shinjuku district is one of the city's most dynamic and impressive. Between futuristic skyscrapers, neon lights, department stores and hidden alleyways, it's a place where Tokyo shows all its facets at once.

Why I loved it

  • A perfect blend of modernity and local life.

  • Vibrant atmosphere, especially in the evening.

  • Huge selection of restaurants and bars.

  • Ideal area for going out in the evening.

  • Very easy to access by public transport.

The must-haves

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

A huge urban park, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. Ideal for a nature break in the heart of Tokyo.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

Free and offering panoramic views of the city, and sometimes Mount Fuji on clear days.

Kabukicho

The most vibrant district of Shinjuku, known for its neon lights, bars and unique nightlife.

Dining in the Golden Gai – a unique experience

For dinner, I highly recommend ending your evening in Golden Gai. This small maze of narrow streets is home to dozens of traditional micro-bars, each with its own atmosphere and style.

It's a completely different place from the rest of Shinjuku:

Intimate, retro and full of character. Small portions are often served, but the experience is primarily social and cultural.

Backpacker tips

  • Go to Golden Gai in the evening, after 7pm for the full atmosphere.

  • Bring cash. Most restaurants in Golden Gai do not accept cards.

  • Some bars require a small entrance fee or a minimum purchase.

  • Combine with a daytime visit to Shinjuku Gyoen Park to balance out the day.
