Located in western Kyoto, Ninna-ji Temple is one of the city's most authentic and tranquil temples. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is often less crowded than more famous sites, making it a perfect visit for those looking to avoid the crowds.

Why I loved it

  • The atmosphere is very calm compared to the more touristy temples.

  • Beautiful and well-preserved traditional architecture.

  • Vast gardens perfect for walking and contemplation.

  • Very few tourists, even in peak season.

  • A unique sense of space and serenity in Kyoto.

Ninna-ji Temple is perfect if you want to discover a calmer, more contemplative side of Kyoto. Here, you can truly take the time to breathe and appreciate the architecture and nature.

Backpacker tips

  • Allow time for the gardens, they are just as worthwhile as the temple.

  • Less crowded = ideal for photography.

  • Combine with a visit to western Kyoto for a full half-day.
