If you have a half or a day to spend in the beautiful city of Ghent, here is an itinerary that will allow you to discover some of its most beautiful places.
Your first stop is the magnificent St. Michael’s Bridge, from where you will have one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Ghent. Admire the roofs of medieval buildings that are reflected in the calm waters of the Lys and take the time to capture the iconic view of the city’s towers. This point of view is perfect to start your exploration of Ghent.
After crossing the bridge, head to the Riviera Terrace for a well-deserved break. This charming canalside location is perfect for enjoying a coffee or a refreshing drink while enjoying stunning views of the city. It is an excellent spot to relax before continuing your discovery.
Then, stroll along the quays of Graslei and Korenlei, two of the most beautiful streets in Ghent. Lined with historic buildings with richly decorated facades, these quays bear witness to the city’s flourishing commercial past. The atmosphere is both picturesque and lively, ideal for strolling, taking photos and taking a short break on the terasses.
Continue towards the majestic Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, an architectural treasure housing many works of art, including the famous altarpiece of the Mystical Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers. Take the time to visit this impressive Gothic cathedral and admire its magnificent stained glass windows.
To end your day, go to the Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen). This impressive medieval castle, built in the 12th century, will immerse you in the eventful history of Ghent. Explore its towers, rooms, and dungeon. The view from the ramparts alone is worth the detour.
